Sports & Landscape participates in the project “Green Grass Energy Strategies in Sports Fields”

Sports & Landscape continues to lead the sustainable transition in the artificial turf market. Another step on this path is its participation in the project “Green Grass Energy Strategies in Sports Fields”, which aims to convert football fields into thermal energy collectors and facilitate the reduction of energy consumption in sports facilities.

This is a study funded by Acció, within the framework of the 2023 competitiveness reinforcement initiatives (IRC) program, after being one of the highest rated projects in the call for clusters.

It is an intercluster initiative led by INDESCAT with the collaboration of the Energy Efficient Cluster of Catalonia, and in which Claror, CET 10 and Paci Global also participate as partners, in addition to Sports & Landscape.

The project aims to promote the application of the innovative “collector field” technology in football fields, using them as thermal energy collectors, as an energy efficiency measure. It aims to take advantage of the thermal energy of the sun absorbed by the grass of the fields themselves to store it and distribute it to the systems and equipment that require hot water. The proposed system is based on the distribution of collectors (tubes) below the grass finishes of the fields.

Specifically, the project aims to gain first-hand knowledge of the economic and technical possibilities of applying the “collector field” technology in Catalonia, as well as to identify the volume and type of sports facilities that can make the most of the advantages of this technology. Specific studies will also be carried out on different surfaces and conditions.

The final objective of the project is to make these sports centers more competitive, while reducing their energy consumption, promoting the sustainability of their energy management, minimizing their environmental impact and promoting shared value.

“Green Grass Energy Strategies in Sports Fields” derives from the initiative “Green Energy Strategies in Sports Facilities”, presented in the 2022 IRC call, which studied this technology applied to the fields of the Netherlands.

The project is part of the Shared Value strategy developed by Acció that focuses on aspects such as talent management, responsible consumption and sustainability, and that requires companies to look beyond their economic profit and value the impact that their actions have on their environment, a mission to which Sports & Landscape is fully committed.
